The Hounds of Basserville: Begin artakeover of Charlottesville
I’ve got a lot to say about Evolve 2012. Have started a post on it already, even. But I haven’t had the time to wade through the massive amount of typing I fear it may take. I think of this while standing on my front porch, sheltered by what seems like miles of wooded earth. I ponder if I should finish the Evolve write up when I suddenly hear a chorus of dogs and what I’m pretty sure were wolves, somewhere off in the distance.
It’s apropos.

Having just arrived back from Basshound’s gig at Zinc, in Charlottesville, VA, it seems as though the posse of canine travelers are saluting me in some weird spirit song. Maybe it’s the Cherokee in me, but I saluted them back, staring up at the moon, pleased and blessed and feeling fine.
I decided to paint Basshound on a whim since we were in town for the weekend (for once), having finally decompressed from last weekend’s festivities and the work week. I contacted them through Facebook and Blake told me to bring it on.
Zinc is an interesting bar/restaurant. I remember going there years ago when it was called The Station or something like that. It opens on a square bar, with clear garage doors (openable) flanking it to the right. These are also located in the back of the place, which makes load in and out hella easy (whew!! Thank God for small breaks!).
Julia and I met the band and then set the merch table up with a few scattered prints, as the place isn’t so big that we could’ve pulled out the bulk of the work. That would’ve been obscene and, as Julia pointed out, kinda rude.
Good thing we didn’t too because even though there were only three people there at about 11:15pm, the whole place was packed by the time the guys played their final song.
By the way, I like Zinc. I said it was interesting? It’s better than interesting. It’s well run, with enough space for some killer music and the outdoor patio with cherub fountains is a nice touch, too. I got to see a lot of old friends that I haven’t seen in awhile tonight. And that brings me to my next diversion:
ARTBOMB IMMINENT: CHARLOTTESVILLE
I’ve spent the past three years driving all the way up the east coast to paint with amazing bands and work with wonderful promoters (God bless you, Drew, Don Dix, Daveydave and Britt and everything good and bad that came out of a watergate summer, Terrapin Presents, Stonehenge and so many more I can’t count).
But it’s time.
The eagle has landed.
Now that Julia and I have found each other and have nested (see above eagle comment), we’re going to go full force on the homefront to see if I can actually create a consistent live painting schedule and turn this into a full time thing. Does that mean I’m going to stop coming up north? No freaking way.
Plus, it’ll be nice to see what opportunities arise from slinging paint in bars and restaurants night after night or other places, taboot.
So Zinc it was. After the success and encouragement received at the Wed. Night Music Showcase Anniversary, I figured we’d started the ball rolling.
Big thanks to Rachel (HAPPY BDAY EVERYBODY), Adam, Susie, Alex, Rachel’s sis and boyfriend, Becky, Ricky, Jeyon and everyone else we saw tonight. YOU ROCKED THE PARTY!
Basshound was on point, funkifying the joint from beginning to end, with some choice covers…Papa Was a Rolling Stone and a blisteringly well executed Another Brick in the Wall montage that was as fluid as quiksilver to name two. We’d briefly heard them earlier this summer at Bucks County Music Festival III and enjoyed their tunes then. Tonight was no exeption. The Boys from B-more can lay it down, let it hang loose, beam in the nonentities and make the dancers say “Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!” They rocked it out at All Good earlier this summer, too, so you do the math, kids.
The following painting, created 09/13-14/08 ties in the molecular structure of zinc with a Basshound. Among other things.
Basis of the Basics of a Basshound
That’s it for now, I reckon. Til dem bones decide to get on back up and get the rest of this story out. On how I evolved at Evolve and learned to let go even more and let the muse come through. Tonight was great because it happened easily, the way it does when I trust, have faith and believe. Maybe it’s because I spent nearly eight hours meditating at a Wise Effort retreat today. Mmmmm meditation.
I think I’ll go see if the wolves and dogs are still howling. There’s something in me that is, nodding to Ginsberg. It roars and, nature I believe, roars back.
Stay tuned for these upcoming events:
